Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage, especially now during the stress and upheaval of the COVID-19 and racism pandemics.

Within the last two years, the world has experienced several challenges and obstacles that have led to hardship, loss and adaptation. Despite these encounters, I believe we have adopted a heightened appreciation for the听value in connection. My joys today were underappreciated prior, and I have since learned the importance of being intentionally present and openly grateful for my friends and family.听
How do you make it work?
I am fortunate to have an encouraging support system to keep me accountable and motivated. My friends and family help me to solidify my expectations for myself and others while offering me agency to grow independently. They also have the most profound patience for me.
What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?
My calendar gets me through. Any reminder, appointment, due date, gathering, submission, etc. is color coordinated in my calendar and synced to all my devices. This has helped me tremendously in both grad school and clinical practice.
How do you make time for yourself?
I love spending time alone, so I typically carve out time to do this. I have been working to set unwavering boundaries for both work and school to allow myself to lean into time off without feeling obligated to be productive. I find I am more efficient when I have given myself time to recharge, which is fundamental to my progress and productivity.
How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?
I don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e ever felt not-overwhelmed in grad school. I think there is somewhere in the middle of underwhelmed and overwhelmed that may be a healthy place for a grad student, but I have yet to find that. I have a heightened appreciation for days-off and slow weeks, however, I tend to function at my best when I am task-oriented. Feeling overwhelmed has not been a negative experience for me throughout grad school, as it is accompanied with academic reward and enhanced self-efficacy.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

海角乱伦 has been compassionate, kind and generous in supporting students. Since I am Canadian, there were countless forms involved in attending a US school, and I was fortunate to have Amanda Ming to assist me through this process. Her endless support and efforts solidified my appreciation for the staff and faculty at 海角乱伦.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

Grad school in any capacity is a commitment to yourself, and your career. There will be definite fears and hesitations, much like any commitment, however, they quickly dissipate. Graduate school is an investment in your growth and competence, as well as an instrumental asset to your career and future. If grad school is a pursuit that you are committed to, then the sacrifices will be secondary to the gains of this experience

Bio:听Monique Nash is a full-time student, wife, and mom of two teens. She is incredibly involved in the 海角乱伦 community as a member of Psi Chi, serving as a 海角乱伦 Student Ambassador, and the President of The Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (IDEA). She is also a member of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students, and a听APA Campus Ambassador, In addition to her coursework and family life she work in Juvenile Justice Homebased Care and is a homeschool and LGBTQIA+ advocate.

When I decided to apply to 海角乱伦, it was based on the positive feedback I had heard from a couple of acquaintances who attended previously. I trusted what they were telling me, but it always seemed almost too good to be true. Being an older student who has had quite a bit of experience outside of academia that was not always positive led me to be somewhat skeptical. While I went into this program with a lot of hope for a great experience, I had no idea exactly how incredible it would be.听

I am a mother of two teenagers, a wife, and we run a small hobby farm. My life outside of academics is full and busy. Things come up unexpectedly all the time. I have become adept at dealing with this and I have a really strong support system at home, but it always felt as though it was an inconvenience to those I worked or went to school with. From the moment I set foot in 海角乱伦, I have felt more support than I have ever felt before in my entire life. Even at my practicum location of Easterseals, my team supports me and encourages me through everything that is thrown my way.听

Trying to wear so many different hats can be extremely challenging and wanting to do my best in all my different roles can be exhausting. It has been such a breath of fresh air to be in an environment that not only cares about the academics, but about the people as well. I could not be doing grad school at this level without the support 海角乱伦 is offering me each day. The culture at 海角乱伦 is one of kindness and empathy. They foster that in the faculty, staff and students who then take that into the community.听

I have had nearly every professor reach out to me personally just to check in. I have had staff do the same regularly. The students who are on this journey with me have become some of the best friends I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. None of this has been easy, but for the first time, I wake up each day ready to face the hard work, knowing it is worth it and that I am well supported in it.听

When people ask me how I do it, I simply remind them I am not doing it alone. I have supportive family and friends, colleagues, professors and mentors, and a cohort that has held my hand every step of the way so far. Asking for help and leaning on those around me is what is getting me through. I feel that who I am as a person is valued and that the human experience is truly understood and appreciated. Being in a graduate program that not only teaches but embodies unconditional positive regard is making all the difference. And I am eternally grateful.听

To anyone considering graduate school for clinical psychology, my best advice is to lean on those around you. If you come to 海角乱伦, stay ahead of the curve on work. Don鈥檛 wait to get things done. If you are struggling, ask for help. Everyone here wants you to succeed. Get up early or stay up late to get in a bit of quiet time for yourself, whichever works best for you. Get the phone numbers of those in your program and stay in contact with them. They understand what you are going through better than anyone else will. Take entire days off and do nothing, and don鈥檛 feel guilty about it. Really dive into the program and get the most out of it while you can. It is life changing and worth it. Mostly, don鈥檛 just try to survive it, but enjoy it.听

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage, especially now during the stress and upheaval of the COVID-19 and racism pandemics.

Navigating graduate school is difficult in its own right. Doing so while trying to maintain a presence in the lives of those I care about make it even harder.

As a Black queer woman, I am faced with additional challenges, many times feeling that I must perform at the highest level at all times with minimal error. With the added stress and uncertainty of a worldwide pandemic, pressures are elevated. The demand for increased openness, understanding, flexibility, and creativity is at an all-time high. Nothing is what it used to be, protocols, and ways of life are altered. Even still, I show up, do the work, and stand out while maintaining a professional demeanor and attitude 鈥 Even when it seems the world is falling apart around us.

Racism has plagued our country since its inception. Though, we are, in fact, living during times of its magnification. Some have used this time as their platform to do meaningful work, while others have lost their patience, their dignity, and even their lives. The awareness of this reality turns succeeding at graduate school from something that is simply 鈥渄ifficult but attainable with hard work鈥 to next to impossible without all the right supports being in place.

How do you make it work?

Support. The support of my partner, my family, friends, and sisters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has made graduate school possible. Two and a half years ago I was debating whether or not I was strong enough to enter the MA program at 海角乱伦 following the sudden death of my father. Today, I am a second-year doctoral student, a student researcher, a clinician, a President of an international honor society, Psi Chi, and a Teaching Assistant to master鈥檚 students. I make it work by allowing myself to be supported.

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

Organization is not my greatest asset. It never has been.

Knowing this helps me tremendously. Recognizing growth edges allow me to channel my creativity in getting things done. Every day I am teaching myself new ways to organize and prioritize. Some days I make lists and check things off following completion. Other days I set alarms as reminders. Before the pandemic, I participated in weekly library sessions with colleagues. There, we鈥檇 organize, consult, and help each other get on track. These days I voice message with my favorite person at 海角乱伦 throughout the day to keep myself accountable. Accountability partners are truly valuable!

How do you make time for yourself?

I make time for myself by doing what I want to do for me, when I want to do it, and not questioning it. I pick up the pieces afterwards. This method may not work for some people. For me, it鈥檚 the only way.

听How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

I try not to avoid my feelings. I aim to navigate whatever it is I am feeling, be it negative or positive, with transparency. I take things that are less overwhelming, then I tackle them. I save the most daunting tasks for last then I fight my way through though. Taking breaks and walking away from tasks works too. I think it鈥檚 important to allow myself to take a break and reset.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

Throughout my time at 海角乱伦, I have learned where to seek support based on what I need. I know where to go when I want to feel cared for, when I want critical feedback without a sugar coating, when I need clinical advice, when I need writing support, etc.

海角乱伦 has done well at putting supports in place and making them available to the student body.听 I think that it is up to the student to find who and what works for them depending on their needs.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

Simply put, you can do it. Sometimes you have to dive into the unfamiliar waters in order to know what to do to survive them. Just know, it can be done. Be creative in your approach to making graduate school work. Make the experience your own.

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage, especially now during the stress and upheaval of the COVID-19 and racism pandemics.

I have been working in the medical field, as a receptionist at a doctor鈥檚 office, for over a year now. When COVID-19 came about, we had to stay open and make sure our clients knew where to go get tested and the other resources that were given to us at the time.

While it was stressful to work and finish up classes during that time, it was nice to be able to communicate with family and friends via Duo and any other video calling apps we could think of at the time. It was also helpful that even though class was virtual, we could all still see and chat with one another even though it was a different medium.

How do you make it work?

By trying to stay in a state of mindfulness. I try to start my morning by writing down, or saying out loud, three things that I am grateful for. This helps get my mind to start off on the right track, especially on days that I know will be more busy than usual. In the evenings, I try to journal about my day to end the day on a good note.听

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

I have developed a love for planners. Whether I jot it down or put it in my phone, or both, I always make sure I have my appointments, due dates, everything I need put down and reminders set so I don鈥檛 forget,

How do you make time for yourself?

I try to organize at least one day on the weekend for myself. Even if it is only for half a day, I鈥檒l block it out where I can do whatever I want to without feeling guilty about the millions of things I have hanging over my head.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

Meditation has come in handy. Starting a routine of finding time, even if it鈥檚 only 10 minutes, to focus on deep breathing and returning to a state of peace definitely brings my anxiety level down and clears my head so I can focus on what I need to get done.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

Everyone at 海角乱伦 has always been kind and willing to help when things have been very hard. Most especially though, the professors have been wonderful. Before and after COVID, they always check in and make sure we are taking care of ourselves before anything else. If we are struggling they are willing to accommodate so we do not burn ourselves out and it is one of the many reasons I appreciate this school and all that they do.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

First and foremost, remember you are not a machine. You cannot take it all on your shoulders. Reach out to your professors if you feel overwhelmed, they are a lot more understanding and receptive when you do.

Keep people in your cohort close, they know exactly what you are going through and make the best support system when you need it most. Lastly, do not forget to make time for yourself. I know when the deadlines pile up it is hard to forget, but when you are feeling burnout you will not be doing yourself any favors. Even if its only for a couple hours, take a break and decompress!

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage, especially now during the stress and upheaval of the COVID-19 and racism pandemics.

The joy for me is knowing that one day my graduate work will 鈥減ay off鈥 and I will graduate from 海角乱伦 as a Psychologist.听 It is my belief that although graduate school can be challenging, the real 鈥渨ork鈥 begins once I am a graduate of 海角乱伦.听 That is when I can apply the knowledge and skills that I acquired at 海角乱伦 to work within the community.

I am looking forward to learning and becoming proficient in the humanistic approaches to psychotherapy. I believe that the humanistic approach will be well suited for individuals facing adversity and life difficulties.

My most challenging moments were losing loved ones and colleagues that succumbed to COVID-19.听 In fact, I, too, was a victim to COVID-19. Although it was challenging, I persevered.

Nevertheless, I also believe that I have a purpose and I found the 鈥渟ilver-lining鈥 during the COVID-19 and racism pandemics. Instead of focusing on the outside world which are things I have no control over, I have decided to self-examine my inner self, my fears, inadequacies, and strive to be the best me.听 I aspire to one day, as a psychologist, be able to help my clients to seek the 鈥渟ilver-lining鈥 when s/he is faced with adversity.

How do you make it work?

I take it one day at a time and give it my best and leave the rest in God’s hands. Also, in order for me to make it work, I focus on my goal of becoming a psychologist.听 By focusing on my goal it helps me to minimize distractions that can negatively impact my focus.

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

Prioritizing is essential at this time of my life; my educational goals are at the top of my list of priorities.听 In order for me to achieve my educational goal, I am actively learning the need to delegate some of my responsibilities.听 My mantra is the 5 P鈥檚: Proper, Planning, Prevents, Poor, and Performance. I have committed to 3-4 hours study/review at a minimum of 5 days a week.

How do you make time for yourself?

Creating balance within my life is key for me to make time for myself. 听I have a saying – you have to take a break because nobody is giving you a break.

My self-care is vital to my overall well-being. 听I typically go for walks, practice yoga, mindfulness, and meditation.听 I personally find spending time with nature most rejuvenating.听 I especially enjoy taking mindful walks and embracing the moment in a wooded area and enjoying/appreciating nature.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

I am actively learning to be more aware of my emotional and physical needs, as well as my triggers for being overwhelmed.听 Being aware of my needs is necessary in order for me to address my feeling of being overwhelmed in order to curtail them. Staying organized is a key process.

I think as a graduate student it is inevitable to feel overwhelmed.听 The key for me is not allowing anxiety to get the best of me. I stay steadfast and enjoy the journey using the old adage what doesn鈥檛 kill you make you stronger. Trust the process!

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

My advisor Dr. Doug Callan has provided me a great deal of encouragement and a open door policy to discuss whatever issues that may arise.听 Additionally, Dr. Shannon Ch谩vez-Korell, Dean of Academic Programs, and our illustrious President Fran Brown have fostered an environment to discuss difficult but needed racial and social justice issues.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

Worry or apprehension is common whenever a new endeavor is embarked upon.听 What has worked for me is creating balance within my life and to focus on my short-term and long-term goals.听

Have patience with yourself – it takes a little time to get acclimated and adjusted. Easy does it! Staying organized! If you stay caught up, you don鈥檛 have to worry about catching up!

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage.

I thoroughly enjoy learning and being immersed into the material. Being around my professors and cohort provides me the courage I need through the program. I love the relationships within the school and I strongly believe they have helped me succeed at 海角乱伦.

Working part-time has been the biggest challenge thus far. Working has, at times, distracted me from the program, creating a difficulty to remain an appropriate work to school balance.

How do you make it work?

I make 鈥渋t鈥 work by having to follow a strict schedule that allows me to meet all of my needs. I structure homework time, reading time, and I also have to schedule time for some self-care.听

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

I am a planner! Organization is what has helped me most through my educational journey. I always make 鈥渢o-do鈥 lists! Making sure I set goals to accomplish each day.听

How do you make time for yourself?

I make sure that I allow time for myself to ensure that I am taken care of both physically, and mentally. I make sure I have off days so I can connect with friends and or family. It is imperative to schedule self-care.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

I believe that being overwhelmed is what gets people through graduate school. If grad school was not 鈥渙verwhelming鈥 I would imagine we would live in a society where everyone has a graduate degree.

However, I definitely am a worrier. I often get overwhelmed with readings, and papers but I have learned to trust the process and accept that I will finish what I need to do. Taking school day by day allows for smaller increments to be accomplished easing anxious thoughts.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

The staff at 海角乱伦 are masters at offering support, selflessly! The school offers a TON of resources whether it is academic, financial, personal, or professional. I have heavily benefited from the networking I have made through my professors.听

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

Take a deep breath and trust the process. 海角乱伦 is designed to meet the needs of every student. I would talk to admissions, or a current student to help ease the anxious thoughts.听

Name: Morgan Van Leer

Program: MA

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage.

One of the biggest challenges I am facing is adjusting to a new life. I moved from Missouri to attend this school, knowing absolutely nobody at first.

It has gotten a lot easier, but at first it was difficult moving away from all my family, friends, and of course my dogs. I do get homesick from time to time, but I have many joys that help me when life gets difficult. These include good books, kickboxing, hanging out with the new friends I have made within my cohort, and Facetiming my friends and family back home. I also find joy in the work I do at my practicum. I provide advocacy services and counseling to survivors of sexual assault, and while this can be difficult, it is also very rewarding.

How do you make it work?

Sometimes I truly do not know how I am making it work. I, like everyone else, sometimes question if I am cut out for this field, and if I made the right choice. When I think about what has helped me through this process, I think of my support system. Although I live nine hours from my family, they are still my biggest support system and will always be there for me if I need them. I also have the support of friends in my cohort, my professors, the staff at 海角乱伦, and my supervisor and staff at my practicum site.

I also use my faith to get through feelings of doubt or overwhelm. My faith helps me remind myself that my passion for helping others has led me here for a reason. The phrase 鈥渆verything happens for a reason鈥 can sound clich茅, but I truly believe in it, and this belief has helped me through difficulties.

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

Definitely use a planner, calendar, or whatever works best for you. I realized that if I don鈥檛 write things down, I will forget about them, so I use a planner, a physical calendar, and my phone calendar to make sure I remember. I also look ahead at which assignments will take longer for me to complete, and I will start those earlier, so I have enough time to finish them without feeling overwhelmed. This also gives me time to ask questions if I don鈥檛 fully understand the assignment.

How do you make time for yourself?

This is something that I have always struggled with, until recently. I used to be someone who always said 鈥測es鈥 to everything, leaving me running from task to task each day without enough time to take care of myself. Since starting the MA program at 海角乱伦, I have been taught how important self-care is, especially in this field. Now I make sure that when I agree to something, it is not causing me to spread myself too thin. I also make sure that every day I set aside an hour or two to do something that I enjoy, such as watching The Office on Netflix for the millionth time. I realize now just how important taking care of myself is, because if I am drained and overwhelmed then I will not be there completely during class, or when I am with clients.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

To avoid feeling overwhelmed I make sure to take self-care measures. I meet with a therapist once a week and attend kickboxing classes 3-4 times a week. I highly recommend having a therapist because it gives you a non-biased, neutral person to talk to about whatever is going on in your life, and it also helps to understand therapy from the client鈥檚 side.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

I have received countless support from 海角乱伦. The biggest being professors and staff I have made connections with that I feel I can go to anytime for help. I also feel as though all members of my cohort support each other, because we are all going through a similar, and sometimes challenging, experience.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

My biggest piece of advice would be to remember your ultimate end goal and remember why graduate school is going to help you achieve that goal. Enjoy the journey of attending grad school, but remember why you chose to in the first place. I have found that when I get stressed and want to give up it helps to remember my goals and why I chose this path. I also suggest utilizing resources that 海角乱伦 offers, and making connections with your cohort members, and the professors and staff.

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage.

The joys in my life include spending time with my kids, good friends, yoga, the ocean.听 These joys bring me light and balance.听 The challenge is these same things are also what suffer when I get very busy.听 When I notice it happening, I work hard to re-focus on my priorities.听 When using joy as my guide, I can rebalance.

How do you make it work?

To be honest, I don鈥檛 know how to make it work.听 I have sat down to write this many times and struggled with it.听 I felt like there was wisdom or a perfect combination of things that I needed to figure out and communicate with all of you.听 Here is what I know.听

It somehow always works out.听

I struggle to remember this wisdom when I need it most.

I could write plenty about support systems, self-care, organization, time management, etc.听 I don鈥檛 feel there is anything new I can offer in those areas.听 If you are like me and struggle with making it work, you may relate.听 I have spent hundreds of hours reading about how to make it work, how to do it all.听 Beautiful websites, challenging blogs, pages of books.听 All giving advice.听 It can鈥檛 be done. 听I spent two decades attempting to making it happen, forcing the outcome, at all costs.听 Until it cost me my health and nearly my life.听 The most valuable guidance I continue to embrace is this.

It somehow always works out.听

The Universe has my back.听 The Universe has all of our backs.听 I hear the message again and again and again.

The grace I offer you is the same grace I offer to myself.听 It is a part of the process.听 Our paths are different.听 Our processes are different.听 There is no magic trick, organizational tip nor perfect combination to offer.听 There is trust.听

It somehow always works out.听

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

As a single mom with two kids, two soccer schedules and three school schedules, it can get complicated.听 Everything goes into my calendar on my phone.听 I check it every night for the following day and often have to look a few weeks in advance.听 Conflicts happen and I try to notice them in advance, so I have time to find a solution.听

I am in love with my iPad and the app Notability.听 I have all of my textbooks, articles and notes electronically.听 I also have my assignments and personal things like groceries in reminders.听 It makes things easier for me because I always have everything with me.听 It also syncs to my laptop and my phone, so if I have five minutes waiting for a doctor appointment, or 20 minutes before a soccer game starts, I can do a little reading for school.

How do you make time for yourself?

I need yoga daily, to balance my mental health as well as to access joy.听 Some days that means an hour practice, other days it means 10 minutes before a meeting.听 I also have to maintain clear and healthy boundaries that are consistent with my goals, personally and professionally.听 I try to dedicate the same blocks of time each week.听 Friday evenings are non-negotiable.听 Whether it is to spend time with those I love, or to make dinner at home and watch a movie, I put all work down at 5pm on Fridays.听 Ultimately, I also try to maintain flexibility and self-compassion, to be able to change things up when necessary.听

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

It is impossible to avoid.听 It too is a part of the process.听 When I notice it starting to wash over me, I reach for the tools I have (journaling, yoga, texting or calling someone from my support system) to acknowledge what is coming up.听 When I journal how I feel or say it out loud, it helps take away its power and creates space to continue to flow through it.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

The professors, supervisors and support staff on campus are incredible.听 The personal relationships I have developed make it easy to reach out, whether it is to clarify a paper, find research resources or to discuss other challenges.听 I have developed a wonderful relationship with my supervisor and feel comfortable discussing everything that comes up.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried he or she can鈥檛 make grad school work?

I would share the perspective that worry is a part of the process and is absolutely okay to have.听 You are not alone – I thought the same thing.听 Know if you have the passion for this work, follow that intuition.听 The rest will fall into place.听

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage.

I truly enjoy spending time with my family which includes taking trips and planning fun activities. However, sometimes managing a family worth of schedules to include coordinating different events such as school, work, and extracurricular activities can be very challenging. Time management and planning are both a joy and a challenge for me and can sometimes make graduate school difficult to manage.

How do you make it work?

Support. If it were not for the support of my family and friends, I would not be able to make it work.

Originally, I was not one who enjoyed relying on others and would have much rather preferred to rely on myself. However, I had to learn really quick that I needed to rely on others in order to survive. I have come to embrace this support and I truly feel that it has allowed me to build better relationship with those around me.

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

When you have two children ages 5 and 3, planning is critical. My family and I have a three-month calendar which sits in our kitchen and it holds my schedule, my wife鈥檚 work schedule, and our children鈥檚 schedules, plus any family events that we have. This even includes half days of school, day care, who is watching my son and who is picking up my daughter on the days I am unable to.

I also Chair a board for a Dyslexic Learning Center, serving southeastern Michigan and have recurring board meetings and conferences which I have to attend. Keeping and maintaining a schedule is how I stayed organized and how I stayed alive. However, it is important to know that sometimes plans change (sicknesses, car troubles, and life), but it makes it easy to see what will be impacted by surprises.

How do you make time for yourself?

At first, I never made time for myself because I did not think it was important and it impacted me psychologically and physically. However, as the semester went on, I started to give myself 40 minutes a day, 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening.

Outside of this 40-minute time, the rest of the day was dedicated to school and family. In the morning, I would shower, eat breakfast, drink my coffee and meditate. In the evening, my wife and I put our kids to bed and afterwards spend time together, either reading together or watching a show on Netflix. This time allowed me to reground myself in my our life and it helped me reflect on my experiences and identify the changes which were happening internally.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

Whenever I begin to feel overwhelmed, I look to my support. My wife, children and close friends are who I rely on to provide logistical and emotional support. I bounce my frustration and my exhaustion off my friends and they help me find my center again. I also meditate and practice new mindfulness techniques not only to get my own clarity, but to experience something which I ask my own clients to experience.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

Outside of the support from individual professors who are always there to answer questions, provide guidance, and give support, the school feels like a family where everyone is there to support you. Additionally, I am dyslexic and whenever I have questions or need extra time on assignments the professors are more than willing to accommodate me.

I have never been made to feel bad about using my accommodations or felt that I was not welcomed to seek assistance. 海角乱伦 has always provided both academic and personal support throughout my time at the school.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried he or she can鈥檛 make grad school work?

Do not give up! There are times when it seems like everything is due but I promise YOU CAN DO IT! Keep your eye on the syllabus for due dates and DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP.

You will never find another school which truly cares about you as an individual and as a professional. Plus, if you are ever feeling overwhelmed or questioning yourself, you can always reach out to me because I am here for you too.

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage.

The joys and challenges in my life that make graduate school difficult to manage are balancing a healthy personal life, work life, dealing with the recent passing of my mother, and scarce time for self care.

Finding joy independent of the graduate program is often hard due to the time commitment. Most free time is spent working on assignments for my courses.听The same holds true for balancing a full time job. I don鈥檛 work in a traditional setting, so my earliest day throughout the week ends at听8:00 pm.

In light of my schedule, I make it my own personal responsibility to do things I enjoy on my off day, the weekend.听I work really hard to stay on top of my work, but I make it a point to put my books down and not check work emails on my weekends. It can be hard if you allow yourself to fall behind, the overall goal simply has to remain at the forefront. Adjusting to a new way of life and being without my mom has also become a new reality in this journey, making intrinsic motivation very important.

How do you make it work?

In order to make it work, the reality is you have to find your reason for embarking on this journey. You need to understand why you are making this decision so that when things are tough, you can balance the long term goal against the short term stress. I鈥檝e created a schedule for myself to maintain a balance that allows me to continue. I don鈥檛 work on Fridays, so most assignments/readings for the upcoming week are done on the Friday before. In completing work early, I usually get to use Friday evenings and Saturdays to do other things I enjoy.

What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?

Tips for staying organized for me include utilizing more than one tool. I have reminders in my phone鈥檚 to do list, my calendar, and my planner. There鈥檚 even a homework tracker app called 鈥淓genda鈥 that a classmate brought to my attention a few semesters ago. I think you have to find what works most naturally for you. Another thing that I do is outline my assignments in my syllabus with different color highlighters to visually see what I鈥檝e completed and what must still be done.

How do you make time for yourself?

Saturdays are mandatory days for myself. It isn鈥檛 something that I negotiate. I work diligently to get my work done on my Fridays, or before, so that I can enjoy my own little break on Saturdays. I also make sure that I read throughout the week at night for myself. These are readings that have nothing to do with class, just other things I am interested in gaining knowledge in.

How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?

I believe adjusting to anything new can foster a feeling of being overwhelmed. It hasn鈥檛 been a feeling that I鈥檝e been able to avoid completely throughout this journey, especially in the beginning. I don鈥檛 want to paint an unrealistic picture, being overwhelmed is a reality within the balance of a graduate program and other life responsibilities outside of the program.

There will certainly come a time where you truly have to be steadfast in your goals and personal motivation. These feelings are fine. You are human. My way to avoid that, at this point in my journey, is making self-care a nonnegotiable staple. It can be as small as just relaxing and lounging, to planning a quick trip to get away over the weekend. Whatever it is, it is mandatory in the same way I find it mandatory to attend to class and complete assignments.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

The 海角乱伦 community is understanding of the life of part time students. You get professors who work with you in the event of emergencies, as well as paying attention to the need for school-life balance. I also have a cohort that was very supportive when my mom passed. A good cohort also helps!

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried he or she can鈥檛 make grad school work?

I would tell a prospective and current student to be diligent in their pursuit. Make strides to always keep the long term goal in mind. The program is manageable and the community is supportive. Make an effort to stay on top of your work and reach out to your support system when you need to. There is no need to carry stress alone when there are people that can help along this journey.

Don鈥檛 allow yourself to neglect your need for rest and care. It may sound weird, but rest and self care may counter feelings of stress and overload. Combine those things with time management, and you鈥檒l see that it is very manageable.
