Campus Expansion Update

��’s campus expansion continues with several exciting updates to share.��

Construction Update

The new building, including our psychological clinic and community event space, is taking shape! Exterior work, including windows, doors and roof installation is well underway in preparation for interior plumbing and electrical, planning for HVAC, technology, and interior finishes and furniture.��

The one-way drive and overflow parking areas are in daily use by �� students, faculty, and staff. We are seeing great progress on a daily basis – and we are on track for opening this fall!��

The Michigan School Psychological Clinic is open!

The Michigan School Psychological Clinic, currently located at the Woodlands Office Center (as pictured above) until the new building is complete, began accepting clients in February 2020.��

The Clinic offers affordable mental health and behavioral care for individuals, couples, and families who are uninsured, or who face unaffordable insurance deductibles and co-pays. ��The Clinic also offers psychological assessment.

Direct services are provided by �� master’s and doctoral level student trainees as part of their clinical training requirements under the supervision of Jim Maher, PhD, Clinic Director (pictured above).

The clinic at Woodlands is located at 26105 Orchard Lake Road, Ste. 213, less than a mile away from �� at the corner of Orchard Lake and Eleven Mile Road. In September 2020 the Clinic will move to its permanent home in our new building on campus; Applied Behavior Analysis services will begin to be offered at that time.

Now Hiring: ABA Clinical Supervisor

�� is hiring a full-time ABA Clinical Supervisor who will be responsible for supervising practicum students who will provide ABA services in the��Michigan School Psychological Clinic. ��Applicants must be Board Certified Behavior Analysts, with advanced experience in ABA treatment and in supervising graduate students in training.��

�� Welcomes New Clinic Director

Our journey��to opening the�� clinic took a significant step in August when we welcomed Jim Maher, PhD��as Clinic Director. Below Dr. Maher answers a few questions to offer insight into himself and his new role at ��.��

Give us a snapshot of your professional/academic background.��

I received my PhD from the University of Detroit in 1989 and have spent most of the last thirty years working in local hospitals on inpatient psychiatric units.�� I have also been involved in training interns and practicum students at the hospital setting, and teaching and supervising graduate students at the University of Detroit Mercy for many years.

How has your career led you to ��?

I thought it would be an exciting and challenging opportunity to start and oversee the development of the �� Clinic.�� From the time I originally applied for the position I was struck by the sense of vibrant spirit that is present in the �� community.�� Consistent with the School’s values, people here seem to truly practice what they teach.��

Describe your role at ��.

As Clinic Director, I am responsible for the running of the Clinic and to do everything possible to ensure that the experience there is a high quality one for the clients and student clinicians. This will involve interactions with the community, involvement in the physical layout of the temporary site and eventual new Clinic building, and overseeing the clinical and financial functioning of the Clinic.

What is your vision for the �� clinic? Five years from now, what will the clinic look and feel like?

In five years, I envision the Clinic being a valued part of the community, a setting in which clients feel that the environment is welcoming�� and the experience is therapeutic.�� Also, the students who work as clinicians will feel that the Clinic offers a solid contribution to their efforts to develop their skills in our field.��

Why do you think a clinic at �� is important to open now?

There is a tremendous need for mental health services nationwide, and that includes the metro Detroit area.�� Despite that reality, there are relatively few settings that offer desperately needed services, and even fewer that offer these services at a relatively low cost.�� The �� Clinic can offer an option to help address these needs, and at a time when these needs are so intensely present in our community.

What has been your favorite part of the job so far?

The consistent welcome and support I have received since starting here!�� It can be a daunting task to plan and start�� a psychology training clinic, and the people here have made me feel like I am not in this endeavor alone.

Name one thing that people may be surprised to learn about you.

I am a huge Bruce Springsteen fan!

Foster the Future Update: Matching Challenge Success!

Foster the Future is ��’s multi-phase campus expansion plan that includes a new Michigan School Psychological Clinic and event space. In February 2019 we posted an update on Phase II. Below, President Fran Brown shares exciting news with our community.

Thanks to you, we’ve met a major fundraising goal!

I’m very happy to announce that as a community we’ve met our Foster the Future Matching Gift Challenge goal by raising more than $150,000!

Donations to the Matching Gift Challenge will be matched by Dr. Diane Blau, President Emeritus and �� co-founder, for a total of $300,000.

Dr. Diane Blau announced the Matching Gift Challenge in September 2017. “Your donation shows your commitment to ��, to the children and families that will be supported through clinic services, and also the schools and communities that will benefit from new outreach activities,” said Dr. Blau.

Foster the Future Phase II Update

Foster the Future is ��’s multiphasic plan to open the �� clinic and community education and training space during our campus expansion. President Fran Brown announced this fall that we were entering Phase II. Below is an update on what is happening mid-Phase II.

Hiring Clinic Director

Phase II of the Foster the Future campaign has reached an important milestone – the beginning of the recruitment journey to find a Clinic Director for the �� training clinic.

The Clinic Director will serve a vital role in the development and operations of the clinic, including key community outreach and fundraising initiatives.

#TestKitTuesday

We are so grateful to everyone who participated in our version of this year!

Giving Tuesday is an international day of charitable giving that falls annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

This year, �� decided to focus our Giving Tuesday efforts to raise money to purchase testing supplies for the �� clinic with #TestKitTuesday.

We asked our community to help share the message – via social media and word of mouth – to help generate donations. The campaign, which ran from November 13 to November 30, raised $1606.

Every penny of these gifts will go toward the purchase of testing supplies. Thank you to everyone to supported our #TestKitTuesday campaign – your gift will make a difference!

Additional Parking Lot

Construction and landscaping projects next door culminated in new trees and landscaping, a paved and winding walkway that connects both buildings, and 40 additional parking spaces.

As �� grows, our community is grateful that our physical space is expanding too!

Campus Expansion: Phase II Begins!

We’re excited to move into Phase II of our Foster the Future campaign and realize our dream of opening the Michigan School training and community clinic.

The next year will continue to be a busy one, with the clinic’s opening planned for fall 2019.�� Several efforts are already underway:

Hiring a New Clinical Director

Soon we’ll begin the recruiting process to hire a new Clinic Director. The director will oversee the planning, implementation, and provision of services at the Michigan School clinic, and will work to combine excellence in clinical training for students with quality mental health care for the community.

Create a Clinic Setting

Until construction of our campus expansion is complete, The Michigan School clinic will initially operate in an office suite just down the road from the �� campus. This will allow us to begin providing low cost mental health services to those in need, including children and adolescents who remain on long waiting lists for testing and assessments. The clinic will then move to a dedicated space in our newly renovated building next door, completion of which is anticipated for fall 2020.

Expand Meeting & Educational Space

Phase I of the campus expansion provided us with much-needed overflow parking and landscaping of the newly-acquired property next door. In addition to construction of the clinic during Phase II, interior and exterior remodeling of the building will allow us to provide community events, seminars, workshops, and meeting spaces for students and faculty.

Make Connections

My goal is to connect with local school systems, chambers of commerce, community agencies, and other providers of mental health services who are looking for a low or no cost mental health referral source in the Metro Detroit area. More exciting info to come….

Phase One Begins!

Good Afternoon,

Arrow pointing to our future parking lot!

I am delighted to share the first photograph of the future parking lot at our new site.

Yesterday several large machines arrived to clear the land and begin developing the property.

Completion of the parking lot and driveways is slated for fall and is the first phase��of the construction process.�� It will be followed by the second phase, which is establishment��of the �� training Clinic and finally, complete transformation of the existing residence.

All of this forms the foundation for the Foster the Future Campaign which continues��to have a dollar for dollar matching campaign.

It is most exciting to witness the activity next door and realize that once again,��a long held dream is becoming realized.

President Diane Blau announces a matching gift challenge to support the expansion of the school, see letter below. Dr. Blau has pledged to match every dollar donated in this challenge up to $150,000. As an educator, my career has been centered on creating nurturing environments in the promotion of learning and growth. These values that I hold dear are grounded in humanistic principles, and practices, and have guided my 35 years of service to the Michigan School of Professional Psychology (��).

My service at the school began in 1980 as co-founder of the Center for Humanistic Studies and culminates now as I complete my term as President at the end of the 2017-2018 academic year. In reflection, I am both humbled by this history and celebratory of its many accomplishments. At the same time, I find myself experiencing a sense of total disbelief.

�� is no longer that “little engine that could.” We can and we did. I have been president since 2012 and as I reflect on the past five years:

we’ve grown our enrollment and now have 170 + students,
achieved APA accreditation for our doctoral program,
attained 10-year continuation of accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission,
started a Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis with the relationship centered approach of humanistic psychology, and
purchased property adjacent to �� to develop a mental health clinic and allow for greater community outreach.

In recognition of all that has been accomplished and the amazing future that lies ahead, as we expand our campus I am challenging you to “Foster the Future” through The Diane Blau Matching Gift Campaign.��I have pledged to match every dollar that you contribute, dollar for dollar, up to $150,000.��These funds will be used for the construction/renovation of the building that will be home to our clinic and community outreach center.

Let’s all double our efforts and continue to provide the best in education and training for the most outstanding clinicians. Reflections from President Blau: Reunion and Celebration

President Blau speaks at the Gala on Saturday.

Our monthly blog feature from �� President, Dr. Diane Blau, discussing what’s on her mind and in her heart regarding �� and the field of professional psychology.

It was a beautiful fall Saturday in downtown Detroit.�� Upon entering the Guardian Building, graduates from more than 35 years of the school’s history were awed by the art deco interior before being whisked off in large vans to tour the Freer House at Merrill Palmer Institute and the Center for Humanistic Studies.

While being transported, it was one of the first opportunities for graduates from multiple years to meet one another and share common experiences. On the ride, many graduates effortlessly reconnected with classmates, friends and faculty.

At the Freer House where the seeds of our programs began with Clark Moustakas and Cereta Perry in the Enhancing Human Potential Program (EHP), William Colburn, Freer House Director offered a brief history.�� Several EHP alumni were also on hand to speak about studies at Merrill Palmer which lasted from 1970 -1981.

The Center for Humanistic Psychology (CHS) just across the street, now Kids Talk, a child advocacy agency, was the second tour site. Former faculty spoke about life there.�� It brought back many memories for graduates that attended from 1981 through 2003 as they explored what had been classrooms, offices, and group rooms. Not only did they rediscover the basement playrooms, but visited the third floor offices and lounge as well.

For many �� students and graduates, this was a first chance to see the institutions that preceded the present campus and gain a sense of the school’s impressive history.

Following the tours, guests returned to the Guardian Club on the 32^nd floor overlooking the Detroit River animated with stories about their experiences. I could sense vitality reflected in their shared foundation and beliefs. The reception seemed to reverberate with excitement and joy.

I had the honor of speaking about our distinctive past and emphasized that commitment to humanistic values and beliefs remain a foundation while we strive to integrate new programs and broaden our offerings. I announced ��’s “Foster the Future” campaign to support planned expansion. We displayed exciting architectural plans for the house and property we anticipate purchasing next door to our current location.

At the close of this remarkable anniversary celebration, a feeling of gratitude was engendered for who we are as an institution, the firm foundation we stand upon and the extraordinary future that awaits.
