海角乱伦 Program: MA with ABA concentration

Occupation: Clinical Behavior Therapist & ABA Training Coordinator at the Living and Learning Enrichment Center

What led you to study psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis?

I have been interested in the field of psychology since high school. While in undergraduate school, I started working as a behavior technician and fell in love with ABA. Helping clients with autism reach their goals and gain new skills instilled a need to study ABA at a more advanced level, which led me to the 海角乱伦.听听

What type of setting do you work in right now?

I work in a home-like center in the heart of downtown Northville! As a clinical therapist, I provide direct 1:1 services in an ABA and psychotherapy setting with support from my clinical supervisors. I primarily work with teens and adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other comorbid diagnoses. Additionally, I offer psychotherapy services for other mental health needs besides autism in a naturalistic setting.听

What led you to this career path?

During my practicum at the Living and Learning Enrichment Center, I realized how important it is to continue to provide services to adults with autism. Many individuals with autism lose services in their late teenage/early adult years due to a lack of resources and insurance coverage. Due to my background in clinical psychology and applied behavior analysis, I can provide psychotherapy using ABA principles to individuals who need more support, but do not qualify for ABA services. Thus, providing services to a population lacking additional resources as they age.

What have you found are the benefits of having a background in both ABA and clinical psychology as opposed to just one of the two areas?

With a background in both clinical psychology and ABA, I can apply principles from both areas to direct sessions. ABA encompasses evidenced-based interventions which can be implemented with adults with autism in psychotherapy sessions. Utilizing a blend of clinical psychology and ABA, I can provide a unique approach to therapy to aid in the development of life, social and communication skills.

ABA influences my work in psychotherapy by utilizing data collection to monitor progress, connecting thoughts & feelings with actions and consequences, and using shaping techniques to enhance the development of life and vocational skills.

What advice would you give someone considering applying to the MA/ABA or ABA certificate programs?

Do it!! The faculty and staff have been amazing resources in preparing to enter the field as a therapist! Not only can you explore the field of clinical psychology, but you can also obtain a certificate in ABA. It is a unique combination that benefits individuals in many clinical settings!

海角乱伦 Program: MA with ABA concentration

Occupation: Developmental Testing and Diagnostic Services at Healing Haven

What led you to study psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis?

I became enamored by psychology early on when I was at community college taking a psychology class for my associate’s degree. At the time I was a transporter at a rehabilitation center for individuals with acquired brain injuries. Taking that psychology class and working directly with people with mental and physical injuries/difficulties really ignited my interest.

As for ABA, that path was a little different. When I got to 海角乱伦, I was going over my classes with Carrie [海角乱伦’s Admissions Coordinator] who asked me, 鈥渨ould you be interested in our new ABA certificate program?鈥 Honestly, I just blindly said “yes”. I didn鈥檛 even know it was a thing, but I wanted to get the most out of my education and quickly saw that ABA would enhance my value and knowledge in the field. So it did not take much persuasion and it was one of the best decisions of my life.

What type of setting do you work in right now?

I work in a large private behavioral health and autism therapy center. My main role at the facility is to oversee and run our developmental evaluations and assessments department. I provide diagnostic developmental evaluations specializing in autism spectrum disorder along with administering and completing cumulative and normative assessments for all of the children at the center (as required by insurance for ABA services).

Additionally, while I am not currently doing this I have and can provide treatment for children receiving ABA services as a BCBA. This includes providing parent training services to families of children with developmental or behavioral difficulties, and psychotherapy.

What led you to this career path?

I鈥檝e worked in a variety of settings within the medical field and field of psychology and one thing that always stuck out to me was the limited use of standardized tests and assessments to better guide professionals鈥 decision-making and recommendations. I saw a lot of professional opinions based on subjective information and it always bothered me. I knew I wanted to be in the field of psychology, but I wanted to make sure that I minimized the trial and error that is still used in many situations. That is what directed my aim within the field of psychology to testing and assessment. Once I completed my degrees and certifications, I found a way to blend the value of all of my education and experience into one position.

What have you found are the benefits of having a background in both ABA and clinical psychology as opposed to just one of the two areas?

It simply just makes you a better, more well-rounded professional in both fields. It also makes you significantly more marketable as a professional. Specializing in ABA and psychology provides the competence and flexibility within either of the fields to provide a higher quality of service to all of your client鈥檚 needs.

Does your work allow you to blend your ABA and your clinical training?

My work is entirely a blend of ABA and psychology. When providing evaluations, I have to take in all the information and environmental factors that may influence behavior. Additionally, as I talk to families, I recognize the stress and other psychological factors that may be impacting them. I utilize therapeutic techniques to create a comfortable and nurturing environment and provide relief at a time when families are concerned that their child or loved one may have disabilities.

I think regardless of your pursuit whether it is testing, therapy, or more traditional ABA once you obtain the understanding and professional knowledge of both these fields it is impossible to not blend and utilize all of it for every client you have.

How does your knowledge of ABA influence your work? Are there specific skills interventions, or principles that you use often?

In the field of psychological testing, ABA has significantly impacted the way I perform my job. Prior to my education in ABA, I administered neuropsychological evaluations at a private practice, and with several clients, especially children, I had difficulty fostering motivation and consistent effort. My understanding of ABA, reinforcement contingencies, and other principles have drastically changed my approach to testing and my effectiveness in always getting the best out of my clients.

What advice would you give someone considering applying to the MA/ABA or ABA certificate programs?

I think the way 海角乱伦 has its program set up so that you can get a TLLP and a certificate in ABA to become a BCBA in just 2 years, is amazing and a no-brainer.听

If you are in the MA program debating if you should add on the ABA certificate, I think you just need to ask yourself; do you want to significantly increase your value in the field of psychology? Do you want to create versatility in your degree so that you have options in what ways you use it? Three extra classes and one additional practicum for a lifetime of additional opportunity and value, I think the answer is obvious.听

For those looking into just the ABA program, ABA professionals are in high demand and once you complete the certificate and obtain your BCBA you will be fully licensed. It has to be one of the only fields available right now where in just 2 years you can be fully licensed, and you could practice independently if you wanted to.

The Psi Chi Professional Development Grant is available to support the professional development efforts of 海角乱伦 Psi Chi members to promote academic and professional excellence in psychology. The grant can be used for a variety of purposes including APA and Division membership fees, journal subscriptions, conference fees, and more. Courtney Cabell (PsyD 1) was awarded the grant earlier this month.听

Prior to becoming a doctoral student at 海角乱伦, I did not understand the importance of research, nor did I believe that conducting research was for me. Little did I know, my outlook would completely change within my first month of the program.

I have become immersed in scholarly research and professional development. During my first two semesters as a PsyD student, I have joined four research teams, have helped developed two psychological scales, and attended and presented at multiple conferences. I am also a member of multiple professional organizations. These have been very costly endeavors.

Recently, I was awarded the Psi Chi Professional Development Award. Receiving this award has been a tremendous relief, as it has eased some of the financial burden that comes along with advancing my research experience and professional development. I would encourage all Psi Chi members to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for this award if they incur costs related to attending conferences, joining professional organizations such as MPA or APA, or purchasing software such as SPSS. Personally, this award has assisted in funding my SPSS software, conference registration fees, and APA membership fees.

Thus far, 海角乱伦 and Psi Chi have made my new found passion for research as seamless as possible, and I am beyond grateful to have been selected to receive the Psi Chi Professional Development Award.

Earlier this year the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) released a position statement on asexuality.听 Jared Boot (PsyD III) played an integral part in advocating for and composing the statement which was titled “Position on the Dignity and Rights of Asexual Individuals.” Below, Jared shares his experience working with AASECT on this important project.

Photo of Jared Boot (PsyD III)Could you tell us about what AASECT is and what they do?

The AASECT is an organization that consists of sexuality educators, therapists, and counselors. It is a multidisciplinary organization; therapists include psychologists, MFTs, counselors, and social workers. Sexuality counselors include physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, among other allied health professionals. The organization’s primary purposes include promoting sexual health and advancing the highest practice standards for sexuality educators, counselors, and therapists. Accordingly, AASECT is involved in advocacy, certification, education, conference programming, and community building.

How did you get involved with the AASECT?听

I became involved with the AASECT when I was a master鈥檚 practicum student at Dr. Joe Kort鈥檚 office, the Center for Relationship and Sexual Health. I was inspired by Dr. Kort鈥檚 humanistic clinical practice in his work with clients and his encouragement of interests in sexual health, especially as they relate to advocacy. For instance, through continuing education and involvement with Modern Sex Therapy Institutes, I learned how to better work with and advocate for marginalized individuals such as those belonging to the polyamorous, kinky, transgender and gender diverse, and asexual communities.

What led to AASECT deciding to make this statement?

Over the past decade, the amount of research and social awareness of asexual and ace-spectrum individuals has gradually increased. The chair of the advocacy committee of the AASECT is very passionate about social justice and advocacy for marginalized communities within the field of sexual health. Among other initiatives for this year, she was looking for an individual interested in and passionate about writing a position statement outlining the rights and dignities of asexual and ace-spectrum individuals.

What did your involvement in creating the statement look like?

I was the primary author and drafted the original statement reviewed by the advocacy committee chair and the AASECT board and edited with their feedback. I drew on my advocacy work, such as Asexual-101 trainings I have provided to other clinicians and my research in this area (e.g., dissertation and conference presentations at the APA Convention and GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality鈥檚 annual conference).

How do you think (or hope) this statement will impact asexual individuals?

As a member of the ace-spectrum community, I belong to online groups for asexual and ace-spectrum folx and shared the statement. I was fortunate to see that some individuals had hope reignited in the promise of therapy in a safe and affirming environment despite many past harms that they and others in their community may have suffered. I hope that future organizations will issue position statements affirming the rights and dignities of asexual clients/patients. Asexual and ace-spectrum individuals deserve access to supportive therapeutic interventions provided by knowledgeable clinicians regardless of whether their therapist belongs to the AASECT.

Based on this experience, do you have any advice for other students and clinicians who want to get more involved with professional organizations?听

My advice is for other students and clinicians to follow their passions and use the broad field of psychology to make the world a better place! Regardless of your particular area of interest, there are tangible ways to make an impact beyond the therapy room, whether through position statements, conference presentations, journal articles, newsletter articles, or trainings directed to other professionals or the community at large. As the Dalai Llama said in 2013, 鈥渏ust as pebbles spread out when a single pebble is dropped in the water, the action of individuals can have far-reaching effects.鈥

International Transgender Day of Visibility takes place annually on March 31st as a day to celebrate the lives and impact of transgender individuals and bring awareness to the continued discrimination听the community faces.

invites you to celebrate Transgender Day of Visibility.

IDEA would like you to join us in celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility. This day is meant to commemorate the many achievements and contributions made by those in the transgender community. It is also a time to reflect on the many challenges the community continues to face. Much of the current information being shared about this vibrant and wonderful community is highly polarized. Often, the truth is hidden beneath political agendas, toxic sound bites, and information that is deliberately misrepresented with harmful intent. To truly honor this community and its many contributions, despite the constant struggles it has faced, it feels like a pertinent time to share an overview of some truthful history and science with you all.听

History

Transgender and gender nonconforming people have existed throughout history. There are cultures who have always not only accepted transgender and gender nonconforming people, but hold them in high esteem. In many Native and Indigenous communities, there are people referred to as Two-Spirit, individuals who were thought to exist outside of the gender binary and often filled special spiritual and religious roles as healers or shaman. While much of the expression of Two-Spirit people, and other transgender or gender nonconforming people throughout history,听 was done via clothing and nontraditional work roles, medical interventions did begin occurring earlier than most realize. Surgical and medical interventions began as early as 1922 by German physician Magnus Hirschfeld at his Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin. Unfortunately, much of this research was lost during WWII and the Nazi book burnings of 1933, when Hirschfeld was forced into exile.

Contributions from the Transgender Community

When looking at history, it is important to recognize the contributions to our society from those who belong to the transgender community. From artists to actors, physicians and politicians, the range of accomplishments and societal progress is exceptional, especially when accounting for the marginalization each of these people have faced along the way. This is a small list to highlight the range of contributions from transgender community from which our society has benefited.听

  • We鈥橶ha, born in 1849, was from the Zuni tribe of New Mexico. We鈥橶ha was considered a Lhamana which is the Zuni term for Two-Spirit person. We鈥橶ha was not only a ceremonial leader for the tribe, but also a cultural ambassador who spent time in Washington DC trying to raise awareness about Zuni culture and traditions.听
  • Alan L. Hart, born in 1890, was a transgender man and physician who discovered that x-rays could be used to detect tuberculosis, which ended up saving countless lives.听
  • Wilmer 鈥淟ittle Ax鈥 Broadnax, born in 1916, was a famous gospel quartet singer. He performed with many gospel groups and even formed his own with his brother William.听
  • Jacqueline Charlotte Dufresnoy, also known as Coccinelle, was born in 1931. She was a famous actress in France. Her marriage, which was accepted by the Catholic church and the government, led France to amend its laws regarding gender listed on birth certificates being able to be updated.听
  • Sarah McBride, born in 1990, is the first openly transgender person elected to a state senate seat in 2020 in Delaware. Ms. McBride is known for her fierce advocacy work for the transgender community and continues that work to this day while holding her senate seat.听
  • Rachel Levine, born in 1957, made history as the first openly transgender senate confirmed federal official. Ms. Levine currently serves as the Assistant Secretary for Health at the US Department of Health and Human Services.听

Current Research

Current medical research is seeking to understand and explain the multiple chain reactions that happen in utero, and how those events can possibly trigger an incongruence between sex and gender. Much of the research centers around the SRY gene which is located on the Y chromosome, and its need for exact timing to activate male sex differentiation. This research may be key in bridging the gap between sex and gender, although there are also many other factors, from biological to environmental and more, that interact with genes and require further research.听听

While research on the physical components of being transgender is vital, so is research regarding the mental health impacts due to gender dysphoria, discrimination, and marginalization. A recent study done by The Trevor Project called The National Survey on LGBTQ Mental Health 2021 indicates that 42% of LGBTQ youth attempted suicide in the last year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth. Transgender and nonbinary youth who had their pronouns respected by all the people they lived with attempted suicide at half the rate of youth who did not receive that respect. And a startling 48% of LGBTQ youth reported wanting mental health services, but were not able to receive such care. The medical and mental health struggles faced by this community are only a part of the picture.听

Legal Challenges

There are currently dozens of state legislative bills being passed or proposed that specifically target the transgender community, focusing on transgender youth and affirming health care. Some of these bills not only attempt to criminalize providing affirming health care to children and adolescents, but also assert that parents are abusive for seeking it out. In some states, parents are being investigated if their children are undergoing gender affirming treatment, which may result in their children being removed from their care. Other laws are banning transgender youth from competing in sports with a team that matches their gender. Much of the information being cited about why this is necessary holds no place in scientific fact, and it becomes just one more way of excluding and discriminating against the transgender community.听

As current and future psychologists, cultural competence is a cornerstone of what we must embody. Understanding a culture in its fullness is vital to truly be able to meet our clients where they are. Social justice matters greatly impact the mental health of each one of us, no matter our identities. Being part of a humanistic institution with rigorous scientific standards means we must see the whole person, understand their cultural context, and embrace the emerging science. Most importantly, we must recognize that our education is a point of privilege which we should always use to lift the voices of those who are marginalized. We should help make what some want to legislate away, discriminate into silence, and keep invisible, visible. Thank you for taking the time to honor the transgender community, appreciate their contributions, and recognize their struggles. Please take this information into the world with you and use it in a way that can help heal.

At the 海角乱伦, we are proud to offer an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) certificate through dual enrollment with our Master’s Program or as a stand alone program for students who already have an MA. The certificate program is an wonderful asset for those looking for educational and professional development in the field of human behavior. Most of 海角乱伦’s ABA certificate alum go on to become Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) but there are plenty of other career paths that benefit from the certificate, learn more about those here. Recently Elizabeth Romano, MA, BCBA, LBA, a MA with ABA certification graduate from the class of 2020 and a current PsyD1 student, sat down and answered some questions to about her experience in the ABA program at 海角乱伦.

What led you to study psychology and Applied Behavior Analysis?Photo of Elizabeth Romano

When I was an undergraduate student, I worked on a sexual assault crisis hotline and found that I was bringing the work with me everywhere I went.听 So when I graduated, I felt I would have a hard time as a clinical psychologist, even though that was a dream.听 Instead, I studied for a masters and doctorate in developmental psychology.听 For various reasons, I did not get my degree and have spent nearly 20 years as a stay at home mother and a yoga teacher.听 In 2018, a friend asked me what was stopping me from following that long ago dream. Within a few months, I was beginning my master鈥檚 in clinical psychology with certification in ABA at 海角乱伦, the beginning of living a long standing dream.

What do you hope to do with your degree?

I have many ideas about what I would like to do with my degree, but certain things I know I would like to pursue.听 I want to be a therapist and I want to help therapists, through supervising, mentoring, teaching, really any way I can.

Why鈥檇 you choose 海角乱伦?

海角乱伦 offers several things that I hadn鈥檛 found elsewhere: Practitioners teaching the skills, small class size which means a closer relationship with our professors, a humanistic approach, and a nurturing community.

What made you decide to pursue an MA with concentration in ABA*?

One of the aspects of ABA that I appreciate is that behavior serves a purpose.听 This purpose may not always be consciously understood, yet there is a purpose to it.听 I also appreciate that sometimes the simplest outlook into a difficult behavior is through the environment.听 For example, if walking is valuable to me and yet I am having a hard time actually doing it, I can put my walking clothes and shoes out to remind me that the first thing I want to do in the morning is go for a walk and to make this action easier than if I hadn鈥檛 put them out.

What stands out to you about 海角乱伦鈥檚 ABA Program?

The first thing that stood out to me is the support of the professors, in addition to how much thought and effort they put into the coursework.听 The coursework provides a fantastic foundation for taking the BCBA certification exam.听 Ultimately, what stands out is the lifelong support network I have developed with my fellow cohort members from the ABA program.

How do you think receiving your certification in ABA will help you reach your career goals?

The toolkit I have from my ABA certification is full of resources and provides options to me in working with clients.听 ABA reminds me to look at the individual鈥檚 environment, which includes their relationships as well as their physical surroundings. I also learned more about body language and what it expresses, through my work with children who were diagnosed with Autism and communicated non-vocally, possibly through an augmented communication system.

What advice would you give someone who is thinking about applying to the certificate program?

There are several things I would recommend prior to application, for example setting up a time to discuss the program with faculty.听 And then once in the program, I would recommend practicing the terminology with flashcards, or Quizlet, whichever works best for you. I would also recommend during field work hours, that the student keeps track of their hours in multiple formats and with as much detail as possible.听 One of those details could include taking notes during supervision with specific dates, times and with whom the supervision occurs. I would recommend thinking through examples for each of the concepts in order to better understand them.听 Finally, I would recommend that a student trust the process and ask questions when they come up.

Describe the (joys and) challenges in your life that make graduate school difficult to manage, especially now during the stress and upheaval of the COVID-19 and racism pandemics.

Within the last two years, the world has experienced several challenges and obstacles that have led to hardship, loss and adaptation. Despite these encounters, I believe we have adopted a heightened appreciation for the听value in connection. My joys today were underappreciated prior, and I have since learned the importance of being intentionally present and openly grateful for my friends and family.听
How do you make it work?
I am fortunate to have an encouraging support system to keep me accountable and motivated. My friends and family help me to solidify my expectations for myself and others while offering me agency to grow independently. They also have the most profound patience for me.
What are some tips or secrets you have for staying organized with a busy schedule?
My calendar gets me through. Any reminder, appointment, due date, gathering, submission, etc. is color coordinated in my calendar and synced to all my devices. This has helped me tremendously in both grad school and clinical practice.
How do you make time for yourself?
I love spending time alone, so I typically carve out time to do this. I have been working to set unwavering boundaries for both work and school to allow myself to lean into time off without feeling obligated to be productive. I find I am more efficient when I have given myself time to recharge, which is fundamental to my progress and productivity.
How do you avoid feeling overwhelmed?
I don鈥檛 think I鈥檝e ever felt not-overwhelmed in grad school. I think there is somewhere in the middle of underwhelmed and overwhelmed that may be a healthy place for a grad student, but I have yet to find that. I have a heightened appreciation for days-off and slow weeks, however, I tend to function at my best when I am task-oriented. Feeling overwhelmed has not been a negative experience for me throughout grad school, as it is accompanied with academic reward and enhanced self-efficacy.

What support have you received from 海角乱伦?

海角乱伦 has been compassionate, kind and generous in supporting students. Since I am Canadian, there were countless forms involved in attending a US school, and I was fortunate to have Amanda Ming to assist me through this process. Her endless support and efforts solidified my appreciation for the staff and faculty at 海角乱伦.

What advice would you give a prospective student who is worried about making grad school work?

Grad school in any capacity is a commitment to yourself, and your career. There will be definite fears and hesitations, much like any commitment, however, they quickly dissipate. Graduate school is an investment in your growth and competence, as well as an instrumental asset to your career and future. If grad school is a pursuit that you are committed to, then the sacrifices will be secondary to the gains of this experience

Over a year has passed since 海角乱伦 moved all of our operations remote in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Never could we have predicted what is now the “new normal.” Below, Kenneth McDermott (MA) explores his experience in our virtual format.

Coming into the MA program knowing it would be virtual, left me unenthused originally about the prospect of having to start my MA online. Knowing I would not get to meet my cohort or professors in person took a bit of the wind out of my sails. Barring that, I was determined to adapt to a style of classroom that, even if It had not been my preferred method of learning, was ultimately going to get me closer to my goal of obtaining my MA.

Essentially, I was of the mindset to make the best of a bad situation and that you only get out what you put in, so don鈥檛 expect more until you do more. While I still highly desire that in person format, as I reflect on the benefits to online learning thus far, believe it or not, there are a few.

The first I would say is its reduction of certain stressors. I do not have to wake up early to get ready, or rush from work to make it to class. I have saved a small fortune in gas money, and I can feel better that I have not contributed as much as I normally would have to climate change. Also, its demand of me to continually improve my self-discipline to meet required class times and assignment due dates. Due to online learning being for many, myself included, an easier to forget format versus having to be to a classroom in-person, this is a key skill to have for any future therapist.

Subjectively speaking, I would give 海角乱伦 an “A” in how they have handled a transition to online learning. While I cannot objectively make a comparison to how 海角乱伦 is in a traditional in-person format (yet), I can compare it to my previous experiences. I had heard through discussions and emails that the staff and faculty at 海角乱伦 worked diligently over the summer to transition to an online format from an in-person one. This gave me confidence not only in the willingness of 海角乱伦 to provide my fellow students and I with a quality education but also that the school was being proactive in having a plan in place, where other schools and universities I had heard, were taking a more wait and see approach.

The pandemic and transition to online learning has not been easy for many. I feel that if one approaches the transition to a virtual learning environment from a perspective and willingness to understand the circumstances, and have a desire to adapt and thrive, one can overcome many of its challenges. One can find success in an online environment, as I have found in attending 海角乱伦, even virtually.
