In 2007, APA commissioned a Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation. In 2009, after a thorough and systematic analysis of the peer-reviewed scientific literature on sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE,) the Task Force stated, 鈥溾�fforts to change sexual orientation are unlikely to be successful and involve some risk of harm, contrary to the claims of SOCE practitioners and advocates.鈥� Similarly, APA filed an Amicus Brief related to the current case, which asserted that the scientific evidence demonstrates that, 鈥渟exual orientation and gender identity change efforts are ineffective and associated with long-lasting psychological damages;鈥� and further argues that so-called 鈥渃onversion therapy is unethical and ineffective, and therefore not a legitimate therapeutic practice.鈥�

In point of fact, APA鈥檚 Statement against SOCE might have been even stronger. The data are alarming and unequivocal concerning this issue. The work of The Trevor Project and The Williams Institute, two non-profit organizations dedicated to suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth and research focused on sexual orientation and gender identity issues, respectively, demonstrate that the risks of suicidal ideation and attempts among LGB people exposed to SOCE are more than double those who are not similarly exposed.听

The Court鈥檚 decision constitutes a potential intrusion into the ethical and evidence-based practice of psychotherapy, apparently based upon reasons which are not related to psychological science. In the words of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson鈥檚 dissent, the SCOTUS decision, 鈥渞isks grave harm to American鈥檚 health and well-being.鈥� 海角乱伦 shares the serious concern about those risks. We also strongly echo the words of APA鈥檚 response to the SCOTUS Decision, 鈥淎PA is unsettled that the Court would treat restrictions against ineffective and harmful treatments as a violation of a counselor鈥檚 speech rather than regulation of professional conduct. Our ethical standards are unchanged. Psychologists should continue to provide evidence-based care and avoid practices known to cause harm.鈥�

From my perspective, those engaged in the practice and profession of Psychology are also called to a higher standard of advocacy and support for human beings at risk for marginalization and the violation of their rights and dignity, such as those in the LGBTQ community. Together, standing and speaking against the unscientific and dangerous practices protected by the SCOTUS decision is one meaningful way that we can attempt to live into that higher standard.

Last March, I was part of a group of representatives from 海角乱伦 who attended the Inaugural Symposium of the Fred D. Gray Institute for Human and Civil Rights in Montgomery, Alabama. The values which have guided Gray鈥檚 remarkable and historic career are now being upheld by the Institute, and 海角乱伦 is an enthusiastic partner in this important work. At the Symposium, leaders from the legal profession, higher education, medical ethics, and civil rights advocacy groups committed to ongoing efforts to contend for equal access to higher education and good medical care, as well as voting rights, and fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion for all people.

One outgrowth of this commitment was the Institute鈥檚 first Dialogos event, held last month at the Case Western Reserve University School of law (Gray鈥檚 alma mater) with a focus on discussing and developing action plans to ensure equal access to educational opportunities. I was honored to participate in the Dialogos as one of 24 invited delegates.听 The discussion was spirited and rich, and explored opportunities for meaningful and collaborative action involving educators, policy makers, and the legal profession to ensure that learning, equity, and justice come together in all of the spaces in which we engage, to shape a better future for all.

The Inaugural Fred Gray Institute for Human and Civil Rights Inaugural National Symposium was held on March 14-15, 2025 in Montgomery, Alabama.听 海角乱伦 President Dr. Brian Stogner, Board Chair Dr. Tanya Martin, Clinical Training Coordinator Carol Hanson, and Director of Student Services Carrie Pyeatt were all in attendance. Dr. Stogner also served as the lead conversant for the symposium’s education panel.

A core value at the heart of 海角乱伦 and the field of Psychology is respect for the rights, dignity, and value of every person. One way that 海角乱伦 and other organizations attempt to live into that value is to pay particular attention to people whose rights and dignity have been overlooked, devalued, or violated. The work of the American Civil Rights Movement has been a historically significant example of that focused priority. One of the great, and often largely unsung, heroes of that Movement is the renowned civil rights attorney, Fred Gray. Gray鈥檚 estimable legal career has included, among other noteworthy achievements, arguing before the US Supreme Court, representing Rosa Parks, advocating for the rights of the participants of the horrific Tuskegee syphilis studies and their families, and serving as the primary legal representation for Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, at the age of ninety-four, Fred Gray still possesses an acute memory, a sharp legal mind, and a fiery commitment to the cause of civil rights. To cement his legacy and continue his work in the challenging times in which we live, Gray and some of his close colleagues have established the Fred Gray Institute for Human and Civil Rights. In mid-March, the Institute formally kicked off its vital work with the Institute鈥檚 Inaugural National Symposium, in Montgomery, Alabama.听 This historic event included experts and panelists in the areas of education, medical ethics, and voting rights, and featured famed civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson as the keynote speaker. Individuals from 海角乱伦鈥檚 board, staff, and administration participated in the conference and helped lead the discussion that focused on education rights and access. (See Fredgrayinstitute.org for a detailed description of the conference.) The purpose of the event was to launch meaningful and substantive dialogue around these important issues, and begin the development of action plans to effect needed changes and progress.

At the conclusion of the Symposium, Fred Gray delivered a stirring address, harkening back to the beginnings of what he described as 鈥渢he first civil rights movement,鈥� which he traced to the events and aftermath of the March, 1965 鈥淏loody Sunday鈥� demonstration at the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and the brutal attack that day on civil rights workers. In addition to reviewing this essential history and the important role he played in it, Gray called for a 鈥渟econd civil rights movement鈥� to emerge in the present day from the work begun at the Symposium.

The work of justice, human rights, inclusion, and belonging is immense and always unfinished. The toll on the mental and physical health of individuals denied these basic rights and marginalized or oppressed by societal forces is well documented in the scholarly literature of psychology. The 海角乱伦 is proud to partner with the Fred Gray Institute in this important work. If the movement of which Gray spoke is to progress, people and organizations must continue the dialogue that the Symposium generated, and join hands in working toward meaningful solutions to the challenges faced by people of color and other marginalized people groups. In the days ahead, 海角乱伦 will work to deepen its engagement and partnership with the Institute and its work, as well as foster connections with other institutions of higher education and organizations committed to these efforts. As this important work develops, updates and information about 海角乱伦鈥檚 involvement in it will be provided in this space. We invite you and all people of good will to join us in these endeavors.

As I write my first message to you as 海角乱伦 President, I am filled with a sense of enthusiasm, anticipation, and optimism. I also have a deep feeling of gratitude for the confidence placed in me by the people of this institution as I take on this new role. I come to 海角乱伦 with a couple of decades of experience in the practice of clinical psychology, teaching, and research. Additionally, I鈥檝e spent the past 15 years or so working in higher education administration, most recently serving for nine years as a university president. As I鈥檝e reflected about the future of 海角乱伦 over the past few months, in so many ways I鈥檝e developed a deep sense of the connections between my previous experiences and the institutional challenges facing us today.

The 海角乱伦 is a distinctive and extraordinary place. With deep roots in the estimable tradition of humanistic psychology, in its over four decades of history 海角乱伦 has made a profound and lasting impact on the lives of thousands of individuals. We will never completely know the full extent of that impact, but we can be sure that there is potential for even greater positive influence in the future. My aspiration for 海角乱伦 is that we become the pre-eminent institution in the Midwest for educating and training multi-culturally competent, clinically adept, and interpersonally sensitive psychologists who engage in clinical and scholarly work and service that transforms lives and communities. Though that is an admittedly lofty objective, I believe it is attainable.听 To achieve such an ambitious goal will require the engagement, partnership, and contributions of people from the entire extended community of 海角乱伦. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, clinical partners, and members of the broader public touched by the work and mission of 海角乱伦 will all have critical roles to play. 听One of my highest priorities as President will be to reach out to individuals across all of those groups to help equip and empower our work, communicate our message, and tell the compelling story of 海角乱伦.

In my short time of connecting directly with this institution, I鈥檝e been struck by the frequency with which we are described as, 鈥渁 hidden jewel.鈥� Though we are relatively small in the broad context of higher education, our effect and influence are disproportionately strong relative to that size. In the days ahead, I鈥檓 committed to working with you to help increase the awareness and even more substantially grow the scope and breadth of the mission of 海角乱伦. We have a remarkable collective of people working and studying here. Our potential for doing even greater good is immense. I鈥檓 excited and grateful for the privilege of being a part of that collective and joining together with you in fostering and growing our world transforming work.
