The Office of Student Engagement at 海角乱伦 hosts a variety of events throughout the academic year to foster continued education and build community on campus. Each month, the goal is to offer a minimum of one educational event and one social event through the Office of Student Engagement; student organizations may choose to host events on behalf of their organization in addition to the Student Engagement-led events. Our Monthly Programming Model creates a direct connection between programming activities and academic material to spark growth and creativity and foster a deeper connection with the key tenets of clinical psychology.听

This year our programming theme is student choice. Incoming students had the opportunity to complete the Incoming Student Survey to identify which topics students have an interest in learning more about. Additionally, current students enrolled in the third semester of 2023 had the opportunity to fill out an engagement survey to provide feedback on what events they liked from the past year and what they would like to see moving forward. Engagement opportunities for the 2023-2024 academic year are directly based on responses from both of those surveys. The student body has direct input on what events are offered and the modality; students are encouraged to reach out to Kinsey, the Coordinator of Student Engagement, with any suggestions or ideas for student engagement programming.听

This year we are piloting the Psychological Educational Advancement Award (PEAA). The purpose of the PEAA award is to foster continued educational development of clinical skills and self as a clinician outside the classroom for students. To receive the award, students must attend six or more PEAA eligible engagement opportunities (two of which must have a multicultural component) throughout the 2023-2024 academic year and write a brief essay for each event about what they learned and how it will benefit their career. All current students are enrolled in a the PEAA Moodle course where they can see which events are eligible, submit the essays after attending events, and track their award completion status. The goal of this award is to provide students with high quality professional development opportunities that strengthens their clinical knowledge and transfers to future employment听settings.听

Saturday, October 7- Metro Detroit Out of Darkness Walk: Join 海角乱伦 in walking toward suicide prevention! The Metro Detroit Out of Darkness walk will be taking place in downtown Ferndale on October 7th. 海角乱伦 has created a team to raise funds for suicide prevention and to walk together during the event. You can register for our team

October 9, 10, & 11- PsyD Info Sessions: Thinking about applying to the PsyD program? Not sure if you plan to apply but want more information? Join Kinsey for a PsyD info session on any of the offered dates to learn more about the PsyD program, the application process, and to receive an application waiver code. Come with any questions you might have about applying or the program.听

October 17-20- Pumpkin Painting in the Atrium: Stop by the atrium anytime October 17-20 to paint a pumpkin for spooky season!

Saturday, October 21- ABPsi Convention: The ABPSi Student Circle at 海角乱伦 is hosting their 1st Annual Convention on campus on 10/21.听 The aim of the convention is to provide a space where everyone has the opportunity to understand and acknowledge Black experiences, and practice the values held within Black communities and Black Psychology as a whole. The convention is focused around presenters who are knowledgeable and advocate for the awareness and advancement of Black experiences and communities across the diaspora.

Wednesday, October 25- Highly Sensitive in a Highly Social World with Dr. Amy Hanes: Amy Hanes (PsyD 鈥16) will be presenting Highly Sensitive in a Highly Social World on campus on October 25th from 12:45-1:45 PM. This presentation will review best practices for working with highly sensitive persons (HSP) and social anxiety. This will include examining research-informed care, including reviewing the results of Dr. Hanes鈥檚 dissertation, The Impact of Social Anxiety and Sensory Processing Sensitivity on Quality of Life, findings. Dr. Hanes is an alumna of the PsyD program at 海角乱伦.

The programming theme for March is Environmental Wellness. Environmental wellness encompasses the relationship between ourselves, the spaces we live and work in, and the planet. Our environment, including our living space, work space, and location impacts our overall well-being and our ability to be safe and feel safe. This includes access to clean air, food and water, preserving the areas that we live, learn, and work, occupying pleasant, simulating environments, and promoting learning and relaxation in natural spaces.听

Tips for improving environmental wellness:

  • Spend as much time outdoors as possible. Engaging with nature allows us to have a greater appreciation for our land and natural resources and encourages us to treat nature with respect and kindness.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle! This is a phrase we have heard since we were kids but is essential in making a difference in our environment. Reduce the amount of waste we create, reuse any items that may serve another purpose or can be used again and donate items that others can use, and recycle materials like paper and cardboard that can eventually be turned into something else!
  • Pay attention to your diet. While it is not realistic for everyone to eat plant-based foods, it is important to be aware of the harmful effects that the production of meat has on the atmosphere. Try to minimize the consumption of meat, specifically red meat, whenever possible.听
  • Walk, bike, carpool, or take the bus when possible. Gasoline contributes to air pollution and taking steps to decrease those emissions whenever possible can make a real difference.
  • Try to purchase eco friendly products when shopping for household and personal items. Many companies have transitioned to offering environmentally friendly products. In general, limiting our plastic consumption is important.听
  • Continue to educate yourself on what you can do to support the environment and your overall well being.

Thursday, March 2nd, 12:15 – 1:15 PM: The Environmental Conservation Organization (ECO) at 海角乱伦 is hosting a Climate Crisis Presentation. Dr. Laura Carter Robinson will be presenting on the impact of the climate crisis on mental health.听

Wednesday, March 29th, 12:15-1:05 PM: The Structural Racism Committee at 海角乱伦 presents an Environmental Racism Presentation, where Laprisha Daniels, MPH, MSW from ) will discuss the intersection between racist and classist environmental policies, practices and processes and the direct link between economic health, environmental health and physical and mental health.听

March is also Women’s History Month. Here is what 海角乱伦 is doing to celebrate:

Monday, March 6th, 12:45-1:45 PM: Lizbeth Meredith, award winning author whose indie memoir is now a Lifetime Television movie will be joining us via Zoom to discuss Women鈥檚 History 2023: Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories and Choosing How You Will Tell Yours. Liz will be discussing challenges that women face and how that can impact mental wellness.

Friday, March 31st, 6:00 – 8:00 PM:听IDEA will be hosting a women’s history month showcase.

The programming theme for February is Financial Wellness. Financial wellness encompasses one’s ability to meet current and future needs. It involves taking steps to live with your means, planning for the future, and understanding basic financial planning. It is important to remember that financial wellness does not mean that you have to limit yourself, but rather find a balance in satisfying your wants and needs while making progress towards future goals.听

Tips for improving financial wellness:

  • Create a budget by examining your income and expenses. Remember to set realistic goals/limitations and account for some leisure spending as this will help you stick to your budget. If you find that you are constantly spending over budget don鈥檛 get discouraged, use this as an opportunity to reassess.听听
  • Build an emergency fund by setting aside a portion of your income each month for future, expected expenses.听
  • Reduce or eliminate debt over time. Paying off debt has many benefits including allowing you to save more and improving your credit score. Remember that having some debt (mortgages, car/student loans, etc.) is normal and it will take time to pay these things off.
  • Being financially literate can help you better understand how to improve your financial wellness. Try listening to financial podcasts, subscribing to newsletters, talking with a professional, or even taking a class from a local community college or library.听

The programming theme for January is Physical Wellness. Physical wellness involves caring for your body by consistently making healthy lifestyle choices, such as engaging in activities that allow you to move your body, eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, annual medical check-ups, and more. It is important to recognize that physical wellness does not have to involve losing weight, but rather acknowledging the need for physical activity and nutrition as it aids in the management of health conditions, prevention of disease and injury, and stress management. There are a multitude of benefits associated with maintaining physical wellness, such as improved mood and emotion, higher self-esteem and confidence, better sleep patterns, improved brain function, disease prevention, and more!听

Tips for improving physical wellness:

  • Find a physical activity that you enjoy doing and that fits in with your lifestyle. This could be going for daily walks, attending the gym a couple of times per week, practicing yoga, stretching, and more.
  • Eat foods that make you feel good and that give you the energy you need.
  • Set a bedtime routine. What helps you wind down before bed? Are you getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep each night?
  • Bring a water bottle with you to work/school/activities and refill it often.
  • Schedule time each week for physical activity. You are more likely to engage in an activity if you have it planned in advance!

Social Events

January 8, 15, 22, & 29, 7:00 – 8:00 PM: Zoom Yoga. Join us for at-home yoga! These yoga videos will be accessible for all levels and will serve as an opportunity to move your body, center yourself, and relax from the comfort of your own home.

Habitica App: Join us on the Habitica app! The Habitica app is a free habit-tracking app that treats your life like a real-life game! Set your personal goals (physical, emotional, academic, anything!) and build your character as you play. All you need to do is download the app and create a username/password, then contact Kinsey to be added to the 海角乱伦 team.

Educational Programming

January 23rd, 12:45 – 1:45 PM: Eating Disorders presentation. Valerie Luxon, PsyD, CEDS-S from , a practice that was 鈥渋ntentionally created to provide mental health services for eating disorders, addiction, mood disorders鈥 will be presenting on eating disorders and treatment.听

Structural racism is the embedding of discriminatory practices within societal institutions that result in privileging white people while perpetuating deeply ingrained inequities among historically marginalized groups.

Throughout the 2022-2023 school year we will host events offering opportunities to learn about ways in which structural racism affects all of us. Whether we recognize it or not, structural racism impacts how we interact with one another, our clients, and our community. As future psychologists, it is imperative to be aware of how the United States’ history and systems play a role in the lives of both our clients and ourselves.

Last year鈥檚 events focused on structural racism鈥檚 impact on educational practices, housing, policing, and voting rights. This year, our focus will be local:

  • What does structural racism look like in Southeast Michigan?
  • How does it impact our work with clients, as well as our other personal and professional
    relationships?
  • How can we recognize it and advocate for change in our community?

Events will allow time for discussion and debriefing. We will also follow up every event with an
email offering reflections and takeaways.

honors our institutional commitment to anti-racism and social justice!

The programming theme for November is Spiritual Wellness. Spiritual wellness represents one鈥檚 personal beliefs and values and involves having a sense of meaning, purpose, and a sense of balance and peace. Spiritual wellness looks different for each person and can often relate to the way each person identifies religiously, though spirituality and religion are not synonymous. Spiritual wellness includes recognizing our search for meaning and purpose, being part of the common good, and living a life that utilizes your values as the main driving force in decision-making and actions. As future Clinical Psychologists, it is important to recognize that each client comes with a spiritual identity that likely plays a large role in the way they move about life. While this may look like incorporating religious beliefs into everyday decision-making, it could also look like a client searching for a sense of meaning and purpose. Being a more spiritually-aware clinician can help clients to feel supported and understood in their mental health care. It is common for individuals to turn to spiritual beliefs during times of grief and suffering to help regain that sense of purpose and meaning in life.听

Tips for improving spiritual wellness:

  • Find an outlet that allows you to take time for yourself, such as yoga or meditation.
  • Take time to determine what values and beliefs are most important to your overall well-being and think about whether your recent actions and decisions align with those.
  • Find a community group that deepens your spiritual practice and connects you with others that have similar values and beliefs.
  • Reflect on what the word spirituality means to you.
  • Keep a journal.
  • Focus on your hobbies.
  • Talk with trusted individuals about your spiritual wellbeing.

Community Events

November 9th, 1:15-4:30 PM: HAVEN Training: Creating a Culture of Consent.This program will define sexual assault/rape and ethical and affirmative consent. Participants will explore cultural narratives that surround sexual violence, ways they impact victims/survivors/their clients, and bystander intervention and responding strategies.

Educational Programming

November 4th, 7PM: Film Screening: Last Days of Chinatown. Join us for this free screening of the documentary The Last Days of Chinatown which looks into the effects the overhaul of Detroit鈥檚 Cass Corridor has on the district鈥檚 long-term residents. This screening is a part of 海角乱伦鈥檚 structural racism programming which is focusing on gentrification during the month of November. Following the screening, filmmaker Nicole Macdonald will be joining us via zoom for a discussion.

November 6th, 7-8 PM: PsyD Panel: Tips and Tricks for Surviving Grad School at 海角乱伦. The event will be held via Zoom and attendees will have the opportunity to ask current students questions about stress and time management, balancing school and personal life, and more. Students can ask questions anonymously during the event or directly to the panelists! This event is open to only current 海角乱伦 students

November 10th, 5:00-5:45 PM: Not That Funny: Conversations about Microaggressions. is an activity designed to build awareness surrounding the origins of harmful common phrases and to build the skills needed to have conversations around these phrases when we hear them. As a part of 海角乱伦鈥檚 structural racism program, we encourage students to join us in this activity that is 鈥渄esigned to change the world, one awkward conversation at a time.鈥

November 15th, 12:15-1:15 PM: ACT: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Sessions with Dr. River Farrell. ACT is considered a third wave cognitive behavioral approach. It is an orientation to behavior change and well-being that is based on functional contextualism as a philosophy of science, and behavioral and principles as expanded by relational frame theory. Through the six core ACT processes (mindfulness, acceptance, defusion, self as context, committed action, and values) clients are encouraged to develop psychological flexibility in order to engage fully in living rich, full, and meaningful lives.听

November 16th, 12:30-1:45 PM: Gentrification: The Physical and Symbolic Displacement of African American Detroiters and Its Impact on Mental Health. Erin White (MA 鈥18, PsyD 鈥22) will be presenting on the impact gentrification has had on African American Detroiters. Dr. White鈥檚 presentation will be based on her dissertation Gentrification: A narrative approach to understanding the experience of African American Detroiters in which she examined the physical and symbolic displacement of long-term residents.

Each month, a dimension of wellness will be highlighted with programming aimed at providing knowledge around different aspects of that dimension, often with a psychology lens.

The programming theme for October is Emotional Wellness. Emotional wellness involves the ability to successfully cope with stressors and difficult circumstances, resilience in times of uncertainty, validating your feelings and emotional reactions to life鈥檚 varying circumstances, and the ability to manage challenges and change. Emotional wellness is an area that we, as psychologists, pay special attention to when working with clients, and it is important that we understand and maintain our own emotional wellness, too. Strong emotional wellness can help us thrive in maintaining healthy relationships, managing stress, increased productivity, living a balanced life, and so much more. Being emotionally well does not mean we are happy all the time, but rather means control over thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is especially important that Clinical Psychologists have a strong understanding of emotional wellness so that our clients can feel understood and supported.听

Tips for improving emotional wellness:

  • Evaluate the stressors in your life. Are you managing stress in a way that works for your lifestyle? What coping strategies work well for you?听
  • Join a club or organization that aligns with your values and that you feel supported by.
  • Talk to someone you trust, like a therapist or a close friend or family member.
  • Take a look at your daily routine. Is your routine sustainable and beneficial to your overall health?
  • Get quality sleep. The better you sleep, the better your chances of feeling good when you are awake!
  • Participate in a hobby that you really enjoy. Consider cutting back on activities that drain your energy, if possible, and do something that you enjoy.
  • Consider journaling, mindfulness, yoga, etc! Different things work for different people, so take some time to find out what strategies work for you.
  • Strengthen social connections. Plan quality time with people that make you feel supported.

Community Events

October 8th, 10:00 AM: Out of Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention in Downtown Ferndale. !

Social Programming

October 3rd to 7th: Pumpkin painting in the Atrium. Take a moment in between classes to unwind and paint a pumpkin!

October 31st:听Happy Halloween! Stop by the Atrium for Cider & Donuts with your classmates.

Educational Programming

October 4th and 18th: Dr. River Farrell will be continuing their LGBTQ+ consultations. These consultations are designed for participants to come with a case or question regarding the LGBTQ+ community. Popular topics last year included: working with Gender and Sexual Minorities, Gender Identity, Sexual Fluidity, and Sexual Identity.听

October 20th, 4:30 – 5:30 PM: Dream Therapy workshop. Nathan Hayrynen (MA 鈥16, PsyD 鈥22) is presenting on the use of dreams in psychotherapy, explaining and demonstrating Gestalt techniques of dream interpretation. The presentation will also cover alternative methods for discussing dreams with clients and assisting them with finding insight into unconscious and repressed thoughts

October 25th, 12:15 – 1:05 PM: Black/African American Boys & Depression. Ed-Dee G. Williams, PhD will be presenting on the unique experiences of Black Americans with depression and their help-seeking behaviors. Specifically, he will discuss approaching mental health with an intersectional perspective, understanding how aspects of race, gender, age, and dis/ability can affect how Black Americans experience, exhibit, and address mental health needs and concerns. In this talk, Dr. Williams will present current research on Black Americans鈥 mental health and will share his recent research on Black boys鈥 experiences with depression and their help-seeking choices as a complex social process.

Student engagement at 海角乱伦 aims to provide programming to address each dimension of the dimension wheel for the 2022-2023 academic year. Each month, a dimension of wellness will be highlighted with programming aimed at providing knowledge around different aspects of that dimension, often with a psychology lens.

The programming theme for September is Social Wellness. Social wellness involves having healthy relationships with friends, family, and the community, and having an interest in and concern for the needs of others. Maintaining and working toward social wellness allows us to build healthy relationships, receive and offer support, communicate effectively, build resilience, practice trust, conflict management, and so much more. Positive social connections enable us to grow and thrive in all aspects of our lives.

Tips for improving social wellness:

  • Join a club or organization that aligns with your hobbies, interests, and/or values.
  • Make an effort to keep in touch with supportive friends and family, especially those you may not visit often.
  • Schedule time for socialization outside of academic and personal responsibilities.
  • Assess the support you give and receive. Communicate your needs and commit to supporting others how they wish to be supported.
  • Reflect on your social wellness. What aspects of your social life are fulfilling? What areas could be improved?听

Tuesday, September 6th, 4:30 – 6:30 PM Ice Cream Social: Enjoy ice cream while socializing with the 海角乱伦 community!

Wednesday, September 7th, 4:30 – 5:20 PM Brain Games: Play fun, interactive games with current 海角乱伦 students!

Thursday, September 8th, 12:15 – 1:15 PM Student Organization Fair: Stop by the atrium to chat with representatives from each student organization at 海角乱伦 and learn about opportunities to get involved!

Friday, September 9th, 7:00 PM Baseball Game at Jimmy John鈥檚 Field: Attend this end-of-welcome-week event to make connections with the 海角乱伦 community and enjoy some baseball! RSVP required.

Saturday, September 10th and Sunday, September 11th: 海角乱伦 Weekend Scavenger Hunt: Engage in a scavenger hunt in the town or city of your choosing. Play with your 海角乱伦 friends or your family! RSVP required.
