Carolyn Lewis Altneave, PhD (1920-1992). Founder of The Society of Indian Psychologists. Nativel American and Alaska Native professionals advocating for and bringing attention to issues influencing Native mental health and psychology today. https://nativepsychs.org. Dr. Carolyn Attneave was a prominent psychologist of American Indian heritage, recognized for her expertise in cross-cultural counseling and pioneering work in family therapy that included the client's social network. Her book Family Networks: Retribalizaiton and Healing (1973, coauthored with Ross Speck) is a key resource on social network therapy for families, translated into several languages. In 1976 she contributed to the Special Panels on Mental Health Services and American Indian Mental Health for the President's Commission on Mental Health and attended the White House Conference on Families during the administrations of Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. She also played a significant role in enhancing graduate psychology training programs.
